Development Update of THE SETTLERS IV (02-02-01) Part X

Hello and welcome to the latest episode of the developer updates for THE SETTLERS IV.

As you’ve almost certainly read in the news section of the BBGC, the German version of THE SETTLERS IV reached gold master status at the start of this week. That means that all the programming for the German release version has been finished off and that the gold master CD has winged its way to the CD pressing factory. Now we’re concentrating our efforts on the English version, which is set to be available in store towards the end of February.

Over the last week we’ve been playing as many multiplayer games as we can so that we can check out the units’ balancing.

Here you can see one of the mass battles which, although likely to occur far less often in THE SETTLERS IV than in its predecessor, are still possible. The allied troops of the Vikings (in green) and the Mayans (in blue) have pooled their forces and are attacking the Romans (in red).

Although the battle is finely balanced to begin with, at the end of the day even the Roman Healers can’t do all that much to hold back the tide of Mayan and Viking reinforcements.

Here we can see a spell in action which is unique to the Mayans. If the tequila is flowing and the gods are in a helpful mood, ten of a race’s own troops or their allies can be promoted by one level. The only downside is that Level 3 warriors and Squad Leaders cannot benefit from this particular piece of magic.

The good news is that the much-loved spell from THE SETTLERS III by the name of “Godly Gift” is back with a vengeance in THE SETTLERS IV, and is still just about the quickest way to get your hands on a selection of goods with very little effort.
