How can I speed the game up?
Pressing the F12 key moves the game on by one minute in single-player mode.

Can I play against the Dark Tribe in multiplayer mode?
No, you can only square up to Morbus and his nasty bunch in single-player mode.

Can I actually get to control the Dark Tribe myself?
No, you can only take charge of the Romans, Vikings and Mayans.

How can I play my own MP3s during the game?
Copy your own mp3 music into the SND\User folder of THE SETTLERS IV. To play the tunes of your choice, you should then open the ‘Sound’ menu under ‘Options’ in the game. If you then click on the “Play user’s music” option, your selections will be played in a random order.

Which soldiers can benefit from the Squad Leader’s morale-boosting qualities?
All soldiers who are in a group with the Squad Leader.

Can I create my own paths and roads in the game?
The paths and roads that you will see on the screen as the game progresses are created automatically when your settlers regularly cover a particularly area of the terrain. It may be of interest to know that paved roads speed things up considerably.

Can I make screenshots of the game and put them on to my private homepage?
You can put your own screenshots on to a private homepage and make them available online as long as this is for purely non-commercial purposes. To make a screenshot, all you have to do is to press the “Print Screen” key in the game - you’ll then find the shot you’ve taken in the “Grab” folder of your SETTLERS IV directory.

Is a map editor included in the main program?
The main game does not include a map editor or a random map generator. Both of these will be made available in the mission CD.

Which races are included in the game?
You can choose from the Romans, Vikings and Mayans. Additionally, players should be prepared to do battle with the menace of the computer-controlled Dark Tribe.

Why can’t I play the Dark Tribe myself then?
The Dark Tribe has its very own economic setup, which would interfere with the balance of the multiplayer mode if players were able to take control of this race.

How many campaigns with how many missions are there?
Each race (the Vikings, the Romans and the Mayans) has its own individual campaign with three missions. You can also take on the challenge of the Dark Tribe in an additional campaign which comprises 12 missions. In these missions, players have to take charge of all the different races in turn in doing battle against the curse of Morbus’s Dark Tribe.

Will there be a DVD version of THE SETTLERS IV?
There may be a DVD version at a later date.

Are female settlers included in the game?
The Romans, Vikings and Mayans are all entirely male. We have a proud tradition of equal opportunities in THE SETTLERS and we have always wanted to avoid a situation where male and female characters carry out different jobs. This means that female settlers only appear if we have a completely female race (as in the “Quest of the Amazons”, for example). We decided not to include a female race in THE SETTLERS IV.

Are the maps bigger in THE SETTLERS IV?
The biggest map in THE SETTLERS III was 768x768. THE SETTLERS IV also includes 1024x1024 maps. Please note that you will need a sufficiently large amount of memory to ensure that these maps can be displayed smoothly.

Can I also use the maps which I created for THE SETTLERS III in THE SETTLERS IV?
No, you won’t be able to do this, as THE SETTLERS IV is a completely new game with new buildings and certain resources which were not present in the third part of the SETTLERS saga.

What changes were made to the AI in comparison to THE SETTLERS III?
Artificial intelligence has been substantially enhanced and the computer now makes for a more skilled opponent.

Has a printed handbook been included this time round?
Yes, a printed manual has been included with the game.

Can I give my settlers names?
No, you’ll soon find that there are far too many little settlers bustling away on screen for you to think about giving them individual names. We also want to avoid micro-management.

Will there be add-ons for THE SETTLERS IV with additional races?
The Trojans will be the new race in the add-on, which will be available in Europe in autumn/winter 2001. In September 2001 we will release a mission pack in Europe with more exciting campaigns and multi-player maps. Read the press release.

Which programs/programming languages did you use in making the game?
We work with Visual Studio C/C++ and use Assembler for some smaller parts of the game.
